We started our trip in July 2023 but leading up to that we had a lot to prepare for before we could even start booking places to stay.
We still had to:
Find a tenant for the house;
Pack up all of our furniture and belongings into boxes and put into storage;
Book a storage unit;
Arrange delivery trucks or removalists;
Shop for any items that could help with storage;
Weighing the caravan and car;
Add additional parts to the car and caravan to make it safer for us on the road; and,
Pack the caravan and car.
Your preparation list probably looks similar to our one, and it can indeed be overwhelming, especially when you consider all the intricate details involved in planning a significant journey. We always told our friends and family that you really have to want the trip because there are multiple moments during the months leading up to your departure that can test your resolve and patience. From the initial excitement of planning what you're going to see along the way, to the more tedious tasks of organising site bookings, packing essentials, and coordinating schedules, the process can be both exhilarating and daunting.
It’s crucial to approach this phase with a clear mindset and a well-structured plan. To navigate this complexity, it’s important to make lots of checklists that encompass every aspect of your preparation. These lists should not only include items to pack but also tasks like booking accommodations, arranging transportation, and even researching the reviews for your destinations (to make sure you're not missing out on anything). Having realistic expectations about what you can achieve and when is vital to maintaining your sanity. For instance, instead of trying to complete everything in a single day, break down your tasks into manageable segments over several weeks. This will help prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Additionally, self-care is very important during this busy time. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of planning and forget to take care of yourself. Make sure to schedule regular breaks, engage in activities that relax you, touch base with your support network, and prioritise your mental health. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, exercising, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, these self-care routines will help you maintain balance and keep stress levels in check. Remember, the journey begins long before you start up the car and caravan, and a positive mindset will set the tone for the adventures that await you.
